85 Remarkably Preserved Human Footprints Have Emerged on a Moroccan Beach
A recent discovery on a beach in northern Morocco has revealed 85 remarkably preserved human footprints, dating back approximately 90,000 years. These tracks, found in clay-rich sand, were left by a group of early Homo sapiens and represent the oldest known human trackway in North Africa and the southern Mediterranean. The research team, led by Mouncef Sedrati of the University of Southern Brittany, made the initial discovery in 2022 while surveying a coastal site near the northern tip of Morocco. What started as a single footprint soon revealed a treasure trove of ancient history.
The footprints, estimated to have been made by at least five individuals, including children, adolescents, and adults, provide a unique glimpse into the past. The varying footprints suggest that this was a multigenerational group, moving together across the beach during a short window of low tide. The site's remarkable state of preservation is attributed to a combination of geological and tidal factors. The beach lies on a rocky platform covered in clay-rich sediments, which created the ideal surface for forming clear impressions. Rapid tidal action then buried the prints beneath layers of sand, protecting them from erosion and surface disruption.
However, the site's stability is now in jeopardy. The rocky coastal platform is slowly collapsing, and researchers warn that the trackways could be permanently lost. The urgency to document and analyze the trackways has grown, with Sedrati noting their hope to uncover more about the group's behavior and purpose on the beach before the site degrades further. This discovery highlights the importance of preserving and studying such ancient sites, offering a unique window into the lives and movements of our ancestors.
