A surprising twist of fate opens the door for a new international rugby career! Benhard Janse van Rensburg, the Bristol centre, is now eligible to play for England, thanks to a recent World Rugby ruling.
Here's the backstory: In 2016, van Rensburg had a brief 20-minute stint with South Africa's Under-20 team, which, according to regulations, tied him to the senior Springboks side. But fast forward to the present, and World Rugby has decided that this brief appearance no longer binds him to South Africa. And this is where it gets intriguing...
Van Rensburg, a 28-year-old rugby star, has been a standout player in the Premiership for the past two seasons. He initially signed with London Irish in 2021 but later moved to Bristol when Irish faced administrative challenges. The Rugby Football Union successfully appealed to World Rugby, citing van Rensburg's unique situation, allowing him to qualify for England based on his residency in the country for the past five years.
But here's where it gets controversial. Van Rensburg's journey to this point is quite the tale. In 2016, he flew to Manchester as emergency injury cover for South Africa's Under-20 team during their world championship campaign. He played against Argentina at Sale Sharks' home ground, but only for 20 minutes as a replacement in a 49-19 defeat. Despite this brief appearance, South Africa's Under-20 side was considered the 'next national representative team', effectively committing van Rensburg to South Africa.
However, South Africa's coach, Rassie Erasmus, has not shown any interest in selecting him for the senior team. This opens up an opportunity for England, but it's not without its complexities. World Rugby's 'birthright' rule allows players to switch to a second country if they, their parents, or grandparents were born there, but only after three years out of Test rugby. Van Rensburg doesn't have this birthright connection to England, leaving residency as his only path to qualification.
This development is exciting news for England head coach Steve Borthwick, who now has another midfield option to consider. With the likes of Fraser Dingwall, Seb Atkinson, and Max Ojomoh already making their mark, the competition for midfield spots is fierce. Add to this mix the in-form Ollie Lawrence and the returning Joe Marchant, and Borthwick has a wealth of talent at his disposal.
The coach may even continue experimenting with Tommy Freeman, who has played both wing and outside centre. Freeman impressed in recent wins over Australia and Wales, showcasing his versatility.
Van Rensburg, who can play both inside and outside centre, could make his England debut against Australia in November 2026. This would be followed by tests against Japan and New Zealand as part of the highly anticipated Nations Championship.
And this is the part most people miss: van Rensburg has already faced New Zealand's second-string side while playing for the Barbarians earlier this month, going head-to-head with the experienced All Black, David Havili.
