In a shocking display of violence, a gang of armed men on motorcycles has left a trail of devastation across three villages in Nigeria's north-western region, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 30 individuals. The brutal attacks, which took place on a Saturday morning, were swift and merciless, with the gunmen shooting, slitting throats, and setting homes ablaze. An unknown number of people were also abducted during these heinous acts. This incident comes on the heels of a previous jihadist massacre in the same area, where over 100 people lost their lives in a similar manner just a few weeks prior.
The bandits, known for their relentless attacks and kidnappings, have been a persistent threat in Nigeria for years. However, recent reports indicate a disturbing rise in their activities in the western and central regions of the country. The village of Tunga-Makeri bore the initial brunt of the assault, with six people losing their lives, and several others abducted. The nearby village of Konkoso suffered a similar fate, with almost all homes burned and four women abducted. The bandits then moved on to Pissa, setting a police station ablaze and taking a life.
The death toll across the three villages stands at approximately 32, according to Reuters, while the AFP reported a higher number of at least 46 fatalities. The scale of the violence has put immense pressure on Nigeria's leaders to take decisive action against the bandits and the jihadist groups operating in the north-west, as well as the separatist insurgents in the south-east. The situation has become so dire that the US has launched military strikes in the northern state of Sokoto, targeting Islamist militants. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning, threatening further attacks if the killing of Christians persists. It is important to note that while many victims of jihadist violence are Muslim, according to organizations monitoring political violence in Nigeria, the impact of these attacks extends far beyond religious lines.
