A former amusement park owner has sparked a debate over the future of Durban's new entertainment hub. Nic Steyn, the ex-owner of Durban Funworld, has raised concerns about the viability of the proposed Durban Amusement Theme Park, set to open in 2027. In a bold statement, Steyn questioned the project's ability to survive, emphasizing the critical importance of proper maintenance for the machinery.
"The overheads will be immense, and the first casualty will likely be adequate maintenance. This is a serious issue, as we're talking about people's safety."
But here's where it gets controversial: Steyn believes the project is destined to become another costly mistake, similar to uShaka and the Moses Mabhida Stadium. He expressed doubts about the projected employment numbers and the return on investment, stating, "I can't comprehend how they plan to make a profit and repay the investors."
The proposed park aims to offer a range of thrilling attractions, including a neon-lit roller coaster, high-adrenaline rides, and a massive virtual reality theme park. However, Steyn's concerns revolve around the economic feasibility and the potential for maintenance issues.
"I've seen it firsthand - inadequate maintenance can lead to serious consequences. An amusement park is not just about the rides; it's about ensuring the safety of the riders."
And this is the part most people miss: the behind-the-scenes work required to keep these parks running smoothly. With over 17 years of experience, Steyn knows the challenges all too well.
The municipality, however, remains optimistic, highlighting the involvement of renowned amusement engineering firms like Team Park Project and Zamperla. They've invested over R9 million in early-stage development, including feasibility studies and legal consultations.
Mayor Cyril Xaba believes they're creating a conducive environment for tourism growth. But Steyn's words linger: "I hope I'm wrong, but history has a way of repeating itself."
