The Melbourne City Loop, a 1960s-era rail network designed for a different city, is no longer fit for purpose, according to Victoria's Transport Department. The $6 billion City Loop Reconfiguration plan aims to untangle the existing rail circuit by severing the Loop and creating new cross-city corridors. This project, estimated to cost between $2 billion and $5 billion, would connect the Craigieburn and Upfield lines in the north to the Frankston and Glen Waverley lines in the south-east and east. The Loop reconfiguration would enable more frequent trains, cater for population growth, and simplify the network. However, the Allan government has not committed to the project, citing rising debt levels and other priorities. The plan was first floated in 2012 as part of a comprehensive 30-year program, but Victoria has not produced a similar plan since. The Labor government's focus on the Suburban Rail Loop without input from transport bureaucrats has also contributed to the delay. The project's benefits, including improved timetables and reduced disruptions, are significant, but the political risk and cost implications are a concern for the government. The City Loop Reconfiguration plan remains a concept, and the government's commitment to other projects may impact its realization.
