The Pittsburgh Pirates are at a pivotal moment this offseason, facing the pressing challenge of enhancing their lineup. Despite being associated with several high-profile names, the team has yet to make any significant moves in the free-agent market. After finishing the 2025 season at the bottom of the league in both home runs and on-base plus slugging (OPS), they are eager for improvements.
In a recent discussion, MLB insider and former general manager Jim Bowden laid out a strategic approach for the Pirates, suggesting they target two well-known corner infielders. During an episode of "Foul Territory," Bowden stated, "Ryan O’Hearn, Eugenio Suárez. Two examples. Two bats. Add some offense, 50 home runs to the lineup."
Suárez, who played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners last season, came tantalizingly close to achieving that 50-home run mark by hitting 49 homers, tying his career best. Over the past four seasons, he has averaged 28.5 home runs per year, while no player on the Pirates has surpassed 27 homers since Josh Bell's impressive 37 during the power-friendly 2019 season.
On the other hand, O’Hearn managed to hit a personal record of 17 home runs in 2025. While his power numbers aren't as striking as Suárez's, the 32-year-old first baseman/designated hitter has maintained a commendable batting average of .277 with an on-base percentage of .343 and a slugging percentage of .445 over the last three years. Notably, he has shown marked improvement against left-handed pitchers during what was described as an All-Star caliber season.
Bowden expressed concern that the Pirates have not pursued prominent free-agent hitters aggressively enough. He believes that signing both O’Hearn and Suárez would be practical moves that could significantly bolster the team’s offensive capabilities. "You can certainly improve the offense of this team. We know they can pitch, so let’s get some bats," he remarked. He is optimistic that these two players represent viable options for the Pirates, potentially enhancing their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
As the talk of potential signings continues, one can't help but wonder: will the Pirates take Bowden's advice and make a bold move to transform their lineup? What do you think—should the Pirates invest in these players, or are there better options available? Share your thoughts below!
