New Suzuki Across: The RAV4's Plug-in Hybrid Twin Unveiled! (2026)

In an exciting development within the automotive industry, Suzuki has introduced a new version of Toyota's RAV4, creating a distinctive plug-in hybrid model aimed primarily at the European market. However, whether this innovative vehicle will make its way to Australia remains uncertain.

Suzuki recently unveiled images and specifications of the Across, which is essentially a rebranded rendition of Toyota’s widely acclaimed RAV4 SUV. This mid-sized plug-in hybrid is set to debut in Australian showrooms by March, but as of now, its release in Australia has not been officially confirmed. Interestingly, Suzuki has indicated its interest in making the Across available to local dealerships, which adds a glimmer of hope for Australian consumers eager for more environmentally friendly options.

The Across shares almost identical features and specifications with the RAV4, with the only notable distinction being the branding on the vehicle. This similarity means that Suzuki customers can expect the same advanced technology and safety features found in the latest Toyota model, including an enhanced plug-in hybrid powertrain that offers improved electric and hybrid driving ranges compared to both the previous Across and RAV4 models.

Under the hood, the new Across will feature the same robust 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, complemented by front and rear electric motors. For the European market, this variant will come equipped with a substantial 22.7kWh battery, delivering an impressive combined output of 224kW. As for electric driving capabilities, the Toyota version boasts a WLTP-rated range of 100 kilometers, highlighting the efficiency of this new generation.

Inside, both vehicles offer a sophisticated and tech-savvy environment, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a head-up display for essential driving information, and a generous 12.9-inch touchscreen at the center console, which controls various functions such as climate settings, audio playback, and navigation.

Safety has been a primary focus in the design of the Across, with an array of advanced features including autonomous emergency braking, emergency steering assist, lane departure warning, front cross-traffic alerts, driver fatigue detection, a comprehensive 360-degree camera system, and adaptive cruise control, ensuring a secure driving experience.

The Suzuki Across will be available in four appealing colors: Massive Grey Metallic, Ever Rest Metallic, Super White, and Attitude Black Metallic, with a targeted launch for European buyers by the end of March this year. If it does reach the Australian market, the Across would stand out as Suzuki's largest vehicle available locally and would mark the company's first foray into the plug-in hybrid segment in Australia.

Currently, Suzuki offers two mild-hybrid choices in Australia—the Swift hatchback and the Fronx small SUV—yet the demand for larger, more versatile vehicles in the Australian market remains high. Michael Pachota, the general manager for Suzuki Australia, noted last year, "The Across represents a bigger car than any other model we offer here, and there's clearly a strong market for larger vehicles in Australia."

He also explained that the decision to introduce the Across in Europe was strategically tied to the region’s specific emissions regulations at the time. This collaborative effort between Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation underscores their commitment to addressing environmental concerns while expanding their vehicle offerings.
