Thickthorn Roundabout: Why the A11/A47 Upgrade Is Worth It | What’s Next (2026)

The Thickthorn junction renovation is a massive undertaking, and the end of major closures is in sight! But for those who've endured the traffic jams and detours, the question remains: is it worth it?

Alistair Stout, leading the £200 million project, assures us that the most challenging closures are behind us. The ambitious plan, approved last year, aims to revolutionize travel times near Norwich by constructing slip roads and underpasses. However, the process hasn't been without its hiccups.

Controversy arose in November when a single lane was all that stood between drivers and their destinations. This bottleneck was necessary, explains Stout, to install a contraflow system and reinforce the central reservation. But it left motorists fuming, leading to speed limit adjustments.

And here's where it gets impressive: over 640,000 tonnes of earth will be shifted to create a network of underpasses and bridges. Imagine machines digging 21 feet beneath major roads! Once complete, a link road will seamlessly connect the A11 northbound to the A47 eastbound, diverting 12,000 vehicles daily.

The benefits are clear: improved access to the hospital and local businesses, and a boost to the region's housing and job market. Roads Minister Simon Lightwood emphasizes the long-term vision, urging patience. But is this patience being tested too far?

The project's impact is undeniable, but so are the current challenges. Daniel Elmer, a local council leader, celebrates the potential for faster commutes and job creation. Yet, he acknowledges the immediate inconvenience to residents.

With a completion date set for spring 2028, this project is just one of Norfolk's ongoing road transformations. So, while the worst of the closures may be over, the journey towards a smoother commute continues.

What do you think? Is this project a necessary evil for future prosperity, or an over-engineered solution? Share your thoughts below!
