Uganda Taxi Operators Federation Chairman Debunks Dubai Bus Import Rumors (2026)

A recent controversy has sparked debates among Uganda's taxi operators and the public. The Uganda Taxi Operators Federation (UTOF) Chairman, Rashid Sekindi, has categorically denied claims that the federation intends to replace taxis with buses, a move that has caused quite a stir.

Sekindi, during a press conference at UTOF headquarters, clarified that the federation's Dubai benchmarking trip is an educational initiative aimed at enhancing drivers' skills and knowledge. He emphasized that the trip is not about importing buses to replace taxis, but rather about exposing drivers to international transport systems and best practices.

"This trip is an eye-opener for our drivers. We want them to experience how transport operates globally and bring back valuable insights. It's unfortunate that some individuals are spreading misinformation, likely due to their ineligibility for the trip," Sekindi explained.

The federation has been meticulously registering drivers with valid passports for the Dubai trip, organized in collaboration with Spiro. Sekindi stressed that the visit, scheduled for January 2026, is a capacity-building exercise and has nothing to do with replacing taxis with buses.

"We are not in the business of buying buses. Our focus is on empowering our drivers with knowledge and experience. The current buses operating in Uganda were not introduced by UTOF, further debunking claims of our involvement in transforming the public transport system," he added.

However, the controversy doesn't end there. Faizo Lule Sebirumbi, chairman of Namayiba Taxi Park, has issued a warning to drivers and the public as the festive season approaches. He highlighted the growing road safety concerns due to unlicensed and intoxicated drivers.

"We urge drivers to be vigilant and ensure they have all the necessary permits. The public's safety is our priority. Additionally, we want to assure everyone that taxi fares have not increased," Sebirumbi stated.

He also encouraged passengers to plan their travels early to avoid delays and congestion during the busy festive season.

So, what's your take on this? Do you think UTOF's Dubai trip is a step towards modernizing Uganda's transport system, or is it merely an educational initiative? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
