Launched in September 2024, Panels offered a curated selection of digital wallpapers for a monthly subscription starting at $11.99 (£9). Brownlee, boasting over 20 million YouTube subscribers drawn to his insightful and sometimes scathing tech reviews, envisioned Panels as more than just a wallpaper repository. He aimed to create a thriving ecosystem, supporting artists and fostering a community around digital art.
The app initially showed promise, topping download charts and boasting two million wallpaper downloads. Brownlee, known as MKBHD online, described the experience as "a rollercoaster ride." However, and this is the part most people miss, the app struggled to find a sustainable audience. In a candid video announcement, Brownlee admitted, "We made mistakes in making our first app and ultimately we weren't able to turn it into the vision that I had had." He acknowledged the app's niche appeal, a point he had addressed earlier when defending the app against criticism shortly after its launch.
Responding to a user on X (formerly Twitter) who questioned the app's viability, Brownlee stated, "The target market for this is insanely small. Most people don't download a wallpaper app. This is for those who have been asking. If you're not into it, don't worry about it."
Despite its closure, Brownlee is leaving a positive legacy. Users will retain access to their purchased wallpapers indefinitely and receive refunds for active subscriptions. Here's the truly intriguing part: the app's code will be open-sourced, allowing anyone to build upon Panels' foundation. "This will allow anyone to build on what we started - we're excited to see what new projects may grow from it," the Panels website states.
