The 1,391-day golf streak ends: Justin Rose's remarkable run comes to a close
Justin Rose's incredible 1,391-day golf streak has finally come to an end, as he carded a sizzling 65 at Torrey Pines, pushing his lead to four strokes. The 45-year-old English golfer, a former US Open champion, followed up a 10-under first round on the North Course with an impressive seven-under effort on the tougher South Course, setting a 36-hole tournament scoring record with a total of 17-under 127.
While Rose's achievement is undoubtedly impressive, it's the story of another golfer, Xander Schauffele, that has captured the attention of many.
Schauffele, a two-time major winner, saw his streak of 72 consecutive PGA Tour cuts come to an end. The American's three-under 69 left him just one stroke shy of the weekend, marking the end of the fifth-longest such streak in tour history.
Despite the disappointment, Schauffele remained composed, stating, 'It's going to be nice to have the weekend off. Going to go home and relax and regroup.'
The golf world was abuzz with anticipation, wondering if Schauffele could maintain his remarkable streak. However, the man himself revealed that he wasn't focused on the streak during the tournament.
'Not really,' he said. 'I mean, afterwards. There’s no boards on the North Course so I kind of missed my putt and I looked at Austin and I said, Is that it? He said, Yeah, you’re done, and I was like okay. So, you know, in terms of pulling a tooth, that was kind of it.'
Schauffele's perspective highlights the importance of enjoying the game and not getting too caught up in personal records. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka, a five-time major winner, made a successful return to the PGA Tour, finishing 14 strokes behind the leader but still making the cut.
Koepka, who joined LIV in 2022, hadn't played a non-major PGA Tour event since 2022 and hadn't competed in 14 weeks before posting a one-over 73 on Thursday. His warm reception from fans was heartening, and he expressed relief at playing four days this week, feeling more normal after a nervous start.
